Leão de Judá: significado bíblico e porque é símbolo de Jesus

Lion of Judah: biblical meaning and why it is a symbol of Jesus

"Lion of Judah" is one of the most well-known expressions in the Bible and one of the most widely used Christian symbols in art, music, and clothing. But where does it come from and what does it mean?

The origin: Jacob's blessing (Genesis 49)

At the end of his life, Jacob blesses his twelve sons, who would give rise to the twelve tribes of Israel. Regarding Judah, he says: "Judah is a lion’s whelp [...] The scepter shall not depart from Judah" (Genesis 49:9-10). The lion becomes the symbol of the tribe of Judah — a tribe associated with royalty. It is from this tribe that King David comes, and centuries later, Jesus.

The fulfillment: Revelation 5:5

In the book of Revelation, John sees a sealed book that no one can open. Then he hears: "Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals." The Lion is Jesus: a descendant of David, the legitimate King, the conqueror.

Lion and Lamb

The most curious thing is what happens next: when John looks, he sees a Lamb as though it had been slain (Revelation 5:6). Jesus is, at the same time, the Lion who reigns and the Lamb who gives Himself up. Strength and humility together — that is why so many Christians identify with this symbol.

What the Lion of Judah means today

  • Courage: we do not have to face our battles alone.
  • Victory: the final word belongs to Christ.
  • Identity: we belong to a King.
