Christian t-shirts: how to choose yours (styles, Bible verses and sizes)

In Portugal people call them t-shirts cristãs or camisolas cristãs; in Brazil, camisetas cristãs. The name changes, the idea stays the same: an everyday piece that says something about what you believe, without you having to say a word.

The problem is that a lot of Christian clothing still looks like it was made only for church camp. In this guide we share what we have learned designing Christian t-shirts in Portugal: how to choose the fit, the message, the colour and the size, so you end up with a piece you actually want to wear.

1. Basic or oversized?

This is the first decision, and it changes everything.

  • Basic t-shirt: classic fit, closer to the body. It works with jeans, under a jacket or for work. See our basic Christian t-shirts.
  • Oversized t-shirt: dropped shoulders, a wider body and heavier fabric. This is the streetwear look: great with baggy trousers, trainers and a cap. See our oversized Christian t-shirts.

If you don't own one yet, a basic tee in white or black is the safest choice. If you already like loose clothing, go straight for the oversized.

2. Message: verse, word or symbol?

The message is the heart of a Christian t-shirt. There are three main styles:

  • A full verse: for those who like to carry the Word in writing. For example, Walk by Faith, inspired by 2 Corinthians 5:7: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” There are many more among our Bible verse t-shirts.
  • A single word or short phrase: subtle and strong. Escolhido (Chosen, 1 Peter 2:9) says a lot with very little, and it starts conversations.
  • A symbol or illustration: the lion, the cross, the sheep. Leão de Judá (Lion of Judah) is a good example: those who know, recognise it.

A tip: choose a message that means something to you. If it is a verse that helped you through a hard season, you will wear it with a different kind of pride.

3. Men's or women's?

The fits are different. Women's t-shirts are slightly more fitted at the waist and have their own measurements; men's have a straighter cut. Oversized tees work for both.

4. How to get the size right

  • Measure a t-shirt you already own and like (width from armpit to armpit and length) and compare it with the size chart on each product page. It is the most reliable method.
  • Don't size up on the oversized: it is already designed to fit loose. Choose your usual size.
  • If you are between two sizes: on the basic tee, pick the smaller one for a closer fit, or the larger one for more comfort.

5. Which colour?

White and black go with everything and make the print stand out. Navy is a softer alternative to black. Shades like beige give a cleaner look and work great with light denim.

6. Fabric and care

Our t-shirts are 100% cotton: breathable, and softer with every wash. To keep the print looking good for years:

  • wash inside out at 30 °C;
  • avoid the tumble dryer;
  • don't iron directly over the print.

7. A Christian t-shirt also makes a great gift

For a Confirmation, a Baptism, a birthday or Christmas, a t-shirt with the right message is a gift that gets worn and remembered. See our Christian gift ideas and our Confirmation gift guide.

In short

Choose the fit first (basic or oversized), then a message that speaks to you, and only then the colour and size. And remember: the best Christian t-shirt is the one you are happy to put on, because that is when it starts speaking for you.
